In a dramatic mid-air incident, an American Airlines flight (AA292) from New York (JFK) to New Delhi was forced to divert to Rome following a bomb threat. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members, was flying over the Caspian Sea when authorities received reports of a potential threat, prompting an emergency response.
As a precaution, Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets were deployed to escort the aircraft safely to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Rome, where it landed at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, passengers underwent additional security checks, while bomb squads thoroughly inspected the aircraft.
Authorities later declared the threat non-credible, but the incident caused significant alarm among passengers and aviation officials. American Airlines confirmed that all necessary security protocols were followed and emphasized its commitment to passenger safety.
Following the security clearance, the airline arranged for an overnight layover in Rome, allowing crew members to rest before resuming the journey to New Delhi.
This incident highlights the heightened security measures in global aviation, especially amid increasing safety concerns worldwide. While the bomb threat turned out to be a false alarm, the swift action of authorities ensured that passengers and crew remained safe.
American Airlines is now coordinating with local and international agencies to investigate the source of the threat.
