In an unexpected twist of cinematic fate, Sooryavansham, a film that underperformed at the box office upon its 1999 release, has now emerged as India's most-watched movie, surpassing legendary titles like Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, and Baahubali.
Directed by E.V.V. Satyanarayana, Sooryavansham featured Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role alongside Soundarya, Anupam Kher, and Kader Khan. Despite its star-studded cast, the film grossed a modest ₹12.65 crore worldwide and sold fewer than 40 lakh tickets in India.
The film's resurgence began with its frequent broadcasts on Sony MAX, where it garnered substantial television viewership. As of 2017, reruns were attracting up to 4.4 million impressions, indicating viewership in 44 lakh households.
Digital platforms further amplified its reach. Goldmines Entertainment, holding the film's YouTube rights, uploaded Sooryavansham across three channels, collectively amassing 701 million views. Combined with television and streaming figures, the film's total viewership is estimated to exceed 100 crore.
