Old Fashioned Gourmet (aka Aravali Foods) is a passion project born in 1993 by Shyamlata Sihare to revive traditional Indian pickling arts. Widowed at 16 and later holder of a master’s degree in advertising, she started the brand at 65, gathering flavours, heirloom recipes and time-tested methods. Her daughter, Vasundhara Jhunjhunwala, now runs the legacy.
The product repertoire includes pickles like Lemon Ajwain, Lal Mirch Banarasi, Gajar Gobi Shalgam, and others; papads such as Low Salt Green Chutney Papad, Sabutdana Papad, Garlic Moong Papad, as well as squashes and mangodis. What sets these apart is the deep respect for ingredients: spices are sorted, sun-dried, hand-pounded; mangoes from specific regions; emphasis on cold-pressed oils and sendha namak (Himalayan salt).
Legacy flavours are not only about preserving taste, but resurrecting memories. Many customers say they haven’t tasted something like these since grandmother’s kitchens. The business balances authenticity with quality: e.g., discarding large batches if the spice gets overheated.
