How can MSP hike in Rabi crops boost marketing in 2025-26

On November 6, 2024 the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) were raised for key rabi crops for the 2025-26 marketing season starting from April by 2.4-7 per cent. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has welcomed the Cabinet decision to raise the MSP of main rabi crops and said the government will purchase the entire 100 per cent arhar, masur and urad from farmers.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has increased the MSP to guarantee fair prices for producers' crops. An analysis by the Bank of Baroda suggests that the overall inflationary impact of MSP (Minimum Support Price) increases on wheat, chana, mustard, and masur would be relatively less, estimated at around 0.18-0.20 percent over the course of a year.

The list of crops with raised MSPs in 2025-26 are:

  1. Wheat: The crop’s MSP has increased by 7% coating it Rs. 2425 per quintal.
  2.  Chana: With the hike of 3.7% in the former MSP, the crop is now going to cost Rs. 5650 per quintal.
  3.  Mustard: The mustard and rapeseed are also raised by 5% fixed at Rs.5950
  4.  Masur: Masur is now fixed at the cost of Rs. 6700 with an increase by 4% in the former MSP.

This increase in MSP is an announcement of the Union Budget 2018-19 to ensure fixing the MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times of the All-India weighted average Cost of Production.

This increased MSP of rabi crops will ensure remunerative prices to the farmers, less fluctuations in market, improved supply chain development and feasibility of crop diversification among farmers.
