India Post has reinstated full postal services to the United States following a two-month suspension prompted by U.S. changes to duty rules. The halt had particularly hurt small exporters dealing in handicrafts, textiles, and online merchandise, many of whom rely on India Post as a cost-effective shipping channel.
Under the new system, India Post will collect required duties and tariffs at origin before dispatch, aligning with U.S. customs mandates. Parcels under a certain value—especially low-value items—are now eligible again, restoring access for many merchants and NRI households sending goods back home.
Officials say the revised duty mechanism addresses the “undefined mechanisms” that led to the earlier suspension. While the technical restoration comes as a relief, challenges remain: exporters will need to adapt pricing, ensure accurate invoice documentation, and watch for delays as systems stabilize.
For affected sellers, this reopening offers a renewed lifeline. But success will depend on how smoothly India Post and its users navigate the new duty collection regime - and whether private courier pressure will intensify.
