Multiple studies show that introducing greenery into the workplace doesn’t just beautify—it works. A 2014 report in Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied found that bringing potted plants into office environments increased productivity by about 15%. More recent research from the Netherlands (2023) echoed this, noting that plants helped people feel more comfortable, private, and happier in their workspaces.
What kinds of plants are best? The cream of the crop are those that are easy to care for and can thrive under office conditions—low light, intermittent watering, minimal fuss. Some standout options widely available in India include :
- ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) – drought-tolerant, survives in low or indirect light.
- Money Plant / Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) – adaptable, often grown in water or soil, grows well even in spotted light.
- Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) – succulent, compact and forgiving if watering isn’t perfect.
- Mini Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) – adds visual relief, blooms, and moderate light tolerance.
- Baby Rubber Plant (Peperomia obtusifolia) – glossy leaves, small size, works well in tight desk spaces.
Why do they help? Plants improve air quality, reduce perceived stress, create a more inviting environment, and introduce natural sensory breaks (a glance at green, fresh leaves) which can help reset focus. The takeaway: even one plant on your desk can positively shift your workday.
