India’s tourism sector is on a record-breaking streak! According to official data, 56 lakh foreign tourists have visited the country till August 2025, alongside 303.59 crore domestic trips. Medical tourism also contributed significantly, with 1.31 lakh foreign visitors arriving for healthcare purposes.

Under initiatives like Swadesh Darshan and Swadesh Darshan 2.0, the government has developed 110 thematic circuits covering Ramayana, Buddhist, Coastal, and Tribal trails, transforming tourism into a cultural and economic powerhouse. In 2024-25, 40 projects across 23 states were sanctioned with 100% central funding, totaling Rs 3,295.76 crore.

Tourism not only boosts foreign exchange-Rs 51,532 crore earned—but also fuels employment. The sector generates 36.9 million direct jobs and 47.7 million indirect jobs, contributing over 13% of India’s total employment. In 2023-24, tourism added Rs 15.73 lakh crore to GDP, about 5.22% of the economy.

With millions of travelers exploring India, the government’s focus on sustainable, thematic, and responsible tourism is proving to be a game-changer-strengthening cultural diplomacy, economic growth, and global recognition.
