Amid reports of a COVID-like Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, Indian health authorities have assured there is no need for alarm. Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), stated that HMPV is comparable to other respiratory viruses causing the common cold, with flu-like symptoms primarily affecting vulnerable groups such as the very young and elderly. He emphasized standard precautions against respiratory infections to minimize risks.
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), under India’s Health Ministry, is monitoring the situation closely in collaboration with international health agencies. Officials noted no significant rise in respiratory outbreaks within India during December 2024 and affirmed vigilance to validate data and provide updates as necessary.
In China, respiratory illnesses, including seasonal influenza, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and HMPV, surged between December 16 and 22, raising concerns over overcrowded hospitals and strained healthcare systems. However, reports from the World Health Organization's Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) suggest the overall scale and severity of respiratory infections in China this year remain lower than in 2023, with seasonal increases typical in winter.
Experts have called for heightened surveillance and early detection mechanisms to control the spread of HMPV and other respiratory pathogens. Dr. Arjun Dang, CEO of Dr. Dangs Lab, highlighted the need to address the challenges posed by respiratory viruses in densely populated regions, stressing that HMPV, though underrecognized, significantly contributes to global seasonal respiratory illnesses.
