The Indian Navy has officially taken delivery of INS Androth, the second ship in its eight-vessel series of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW-SWCs), built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. ]
Measuring about 77 metres in length, Androth is among the largest warships in the Indian Navy powered by a diesel-engine and waterjet combination. It is fitted with advanced systems including lightweight torpedoes, indigenous ASW rockets, and a shallow-water sonar suite, significantly enhancing the Navy’s submarine-detection and littoral warfare capabilities.
The name “Androth” draws from Androth Island in Lakshadweep, symbolizing India’s commitment to safeguarding its island territories and vast maritime frontiers. With over 80% indigenous content, the vessel embodies the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” vision—reducing reliance on imports while strengthening domestic shipbuilding prowess.
INS Androth is expected to play a crucial role in coastal surveillance, shallow-water submarine threats, and mine-laying operations, reinforcing India’s maritime security posture.
