An ET editorial argues that India’s pursuit of self-reliance while vital must evolve in response to rapidly shifting global currents. The op-ed suggests India move past isolated, protectionist impulses and adopt a more nuanced strategy of selective openness, combining domestic strengthening with global engagement.
Instead of relying solely on tariff barriers or restrictive industrial policies, India should push comprehensive reforms including labour deregulation, infrastructural scaling, and incentives for private R&D that align with global opportunities while safeguarding economic resilience.
This recalibrated approach isn't a retreat from self-reliance, but an upgrade: fostering an environment where Atmanirbhar Bharat supports strategic autonomy, not isolation. By pairing targeted liberalism with industrial policy, India can attract global partnerships, diversify supply chains, and protect national interests without retreating behind trade walls.
