Is infertility rising in India? These lifestyle tips can help!

India's fertility rate has dropped to 1.9, below the replacement level of 2.1 needed for population stability, according to the UNFPA. Experts say poor lifestyle choices are a major contributor to this decline.

Doctors recommend the following six lifestyle changes to improve reproductive health:

  1. Eat a nutritious diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, selenium, and B-vitamins to support hormonal balance and ovulation.

  2. Maintain a healthy weight, as obesity can lead to conditions like diabetes and hormonal issues that impact fertility.

  3. Exercise regularly—aerobics, strength training, or yoga - to boost metabolism and regulate hormones, especially useful for managing PCOS in women.

  4. Avoid smoking and alcohol, as they damage sperm and egg DNA and reduce hormone levels.

  5. Manage stress, which can disrupt hormonal functions and reduce fertility.

  6. Get quality sleep and avoid exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastics, cosmetics, and pollution.

Early awareness and proactive changes are key to reversing the declining fertility trend.
