Jasprit Bumrah makes history in ICC rankings with an unprecedented achievement for India

Jasprit Bumrah, often referred to as the "Kohinoor of Indian cricket," achieved a historic milestone in the ICC rankings by surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin’s record for Test bowlers. Finishing 2024 with 71 wickets in the longest format, Bumrah topped the year’s wicket-takers chart, which helped him achieve the highest-ever rating points by an Indian bowler. His consistent performances culminated in a remarkable nine-wicket match haul in Melbourne, which secured his position at the top of the ICC Men's Test Bowling Rankings.

Bumrah’s stellar year earned him recognition as a nominee for the prestigious ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year and ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year awards. He surpassed his previous best ranking of 904, now holding 907 rating points. This achievement places him joint-17th on the all-time list alongside former England spinner Derek Underwood.

Although Bumrah is still a few spots away from the global all-time top ranks, he remains in impressive company. The all-time list is led by England's Sydney Barnes (932) and George Lohmann (931), while Imran Khan (922) and Muttiah Muralidaran (920) round out the top four.

Meanwhile, Australia’s captain Pat Cummins also saw a boost in his ranking, reaching joint-fifth with Glenn McGrath at 914 points. Cummins’ strong performance in the fourth Test against India helped him rise in the all-rounder rankings to third place. Additionally, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved his career-high ranking, moving up to fourth, while Nitish Kumar Reddy made a significant jump to 53rd after scoring his maiden Test century.
