Have you ever noticed how some couples, over time, start to resemble each other so much that they could pass for siblings? Think of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan or Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, pairs whose chemistry seems mirrored in their shared aura or facial expressions. This phenomenon has fascinated scientists and psychologists for decades.
A 1987 University of Michigan study suggested that long-term couples might grow to look alike because they share emotions over the years, leading to similar wrinkles and expressions. For instance, a shared laugh or a tear-filled moment could shape their facial features in subtly similar ways.
But why do many couples seem to look alike from the start? Social psychologist Justin Lehmiller explains that we’re naturally drawn to what’s familiar, sometimes, even our own faces. Studies show that people subconsciously find their own features attractive, as they associate familiarity with comfort and appeal. A 2013 experiment found that participants rated their partner’s photos more attractive when their own facial features were digitally blended in.
This attraction to similarity extends to genetics. Couples often share common ancestry or environments, which might explain why stars like Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli, both from North India, resonate so harmoniously. These genetic and environmental parallels can lead to physical similarities.
However, the advent of online dating and broader social circles might challenge this trend. As people interact across diverse communities, they’re exposed to varied traits, making relationships more inclusive. Yet, attraction remains unpredictable. While shared features might spark initial attraction, a lasting relationship depends on far more than appearances! (PS: Never go for just the looks)
