17-year-old Manirul Beg mistook her constant coughing and chest pain for tuberculosis, but doctors found a hydatid cyst instead - a parasitic lung infection often caused by petting or feeding dogs and cats.
The culprit? A tapeworm spread through the feces, saliva, or fur of infected animals. The eggs, once inhaled or ingested, can form cysts in vital organs like the lungs, liver, or brain, and if untreated, may lead to seizures or even anaphylactic shock.
Doctors warn that rising pet ownership and poor hygiene habits like skipping handwashing or failing to deworm pets are fueling this silent health crisis in urban India.
Thankfully, early detection through imaging and blood tests can prevent misdiagnosis. Treatments include antiparasitic drugs, cyst drainage, or surgery in severe cases. So, if you're a pet parent or regularly feed strays - wash your hands, get your pets dewormed, and don’t ignore persistent respiratory symptoms.
