In an age of computers and fancy fonts, the ancient art of calligraphy is slowly fading. But in Delhi, some passionate artists are working hard to keep this tradition alive.
Qamar Dagar, a well-known calligrapher and winner of the Nari Shakti Puraskar, blends Hindi and Urdu beautifully in her art. She believes calligraphy is not just writing-it’s a form of meditation. She also runs a trust to support other calligraphy artists and give them a platform to grow.
Another artist, Mohammad Mohsin Ul Haque, has been doing calligraphy in English, Urdu, Odia, and Hindi for over 40 years. He creates certificates, posters, and teaches children, though he admits that the income is low and very few choose it as a full-time career.
Mohammad Ghalib, 62, writes Urdu calligraphy using bamboo pens and black ink. He believes that handwritten art carries emotion and warmth that machines cannot replace.
While modern tools are faster, these artists remind us that calligraphy is not just writing-it’s a connection to culture, emotion, and identity
