Nine iconic Monuments in India built by women rulers!

Indian history is rich with architectural marvels commissioned by visionary women rulers. These nine monuments are shining testimonies of their elegance, power, and cultural influence:

  1. Virupaksha Temple, Pattadakal – Built in the 8th century by Queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate King Vikramaditya II’s victory over the Pallavas .

  2. Itmad-ud-Daulah, Agra – Crafted by Empress Nur Jahan (1622–1628) as a homage to her father, known as the “Baby Taj” .

  3. Rani ki Vav, Patan – A stunning 11th-century stepwell built by Queen Udayamati in memory of King Bhima I .

  4. Mohinishwara Shivalay Temple, Gulmarg – Established by Maharani Mohini Bai Sisodia in 1915, visible from all around Gulmarg valley.

  5. Mirjan Fort, Karnataka – Built by Queen Chennabhairadevi, the "Pepper Queen," as a pepper trade stronghold in the 16th century.

  6. Khayr al-Manazil Mosque, Delhi – Commissioned by Maham Anga in 1561, who wielded significant influence as Akbar’s wet nurse .

  7. Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi – The first Mughal garden-tomb, commissioned by Hamida Banu Begum in 1569 in memory of her husband .

  8. Lal Darwaza Masjid, Jaunpur – Built by Queen Rajye Bibi in 1447 and linked to the adjacent school she also founded.

  9. Taj-ul-Masjid, Bhopal – One of India’s largest mosques, initiated by Begum Shah Jahan of Bhopal in the 19th century .
