Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will continue as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, despite reports suggesting he might resign. Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud confirmed Yunus is staying, emphasizing that the cabinet faces challenges but remains committed to its duties.
The announcement followed an unscheduled advisory council meeting, held just before Yunus was scheduled to meet leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat e Islami.
Yunus, who took charge after a mass uprising, had previously hinted at quitting if political parties failed to cooperate. Political unrest has intensified, with thousands protesting in Dhaka, demanding a fixed election date. Yunus has promised polls by June 2026, but military leadership, including Army Chief General Waker Uz Zaman, insists elections must happen by December 2025.
Amid tensions with the army and rising public pressure, Yunus’s leadership remains at a critical crossroads.
