In a groundbreaking achievement, Audrey Crews, paralyzed for two decades, has become the first woman to control a computer using her thoughts through Neuralink's brain implant. By simply thinking, she successfully wrote her name "Audrey" on a digital screen, a feat she hadn't accomplished in 20 years.
Neuralink's device, known as the N1 or "The Link," is a coin-sized implant connected to the brain's motor cortex via 128 ultra-thin threads. These threads detect neural signals associated with movement intentions and wirelessly transmit them to a computer, enabling control of digital interfaces without physical movement.
Audrey underwent the implantation procedure at the University of Miami Health Centre. While the chip doesn't restore physical mobility, it empowers her to interact with digital devices writing, drawing, and even playing games using only her mind.
Identifying herself as "P9" in Neuralink's human trial program, Audrey shared her journey on X (formerly Twitter), expressing excitement about the possibilities ahead. Her progress underscores the potential of brain-computer interfaces to enhance the quality of life for individuals with severe physical disabilities.
This milestone follows earlier successes, such as Noland Arbaugh, Neuralink's first implant recipient, who demonstrated the ability to control a computer cursor and play games using his thoughts. As Neuralink continues its trials, these advancements herald a new era in assistive technology, offering hope and autonomy to those affected by paralysis.
