In a major breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has confirmed that all three terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack were Pakistani nationals, contradicting earlier Jammu and Kashmir Police sketches based on eyewitness accounts. The attack had killed 26 people, including 25 tourists and a local pony handler.
According to NIA sources, the attackers were identified as Pakistani citizens affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, and were sheltered by two local residents—recently arrested—who provided them food, shelter, and logistical support in a hilltop hut near Pahalgam. One of the attackers is believed to be Suleiman Shah, a known LeT operative. The two arrested locals reportedly gave detailed descriptions that matched intelligence reports, allowing the agency to confirm their identities.
The earlier sketches released by the police have now been deemed inaccurate, as they were reportedly drawn under pressure and without confirmed inputs. Officials said the discrepancy was due to the confusion during the ambush and limited visibility.
The probe has now shifted focus to cross-border handlers and sleeper cells. The NIA is also examining digital evidence, surveillance intercepts, and cross-border funding channels to dismantle the wider network behind one of the deadliest recent attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
