No More Family Time: Gambhir’s Tough Rules for Indian Cricketers

In a significant move aimed at addressing indiscipline within the Indian cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced stricter regulations for players during international tours. The decision follows India's consecutive Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia under the leadership duo of Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir, reportedly at the forefront of these changes, emphasized the need to root out indiscipline during a review meeting. "Gambhir highlighted that players' lack of focus contributed to recent losses," a source revealed. As per the revised policy, family stays on tours exceeding 45 days will now be restricted to 14 days, while shorter tours will allow just a week's family presence.

Gambhir has also pushed for greater accountability among junior players, citing their frequent outings during the Australian tour. Notably, only one official team dinner occurred during the three-month series from November 2024 to January 2025.

Adding to these reforms, a senior Indian player suggested a performance-linked disbursement of match fees. This proposal, endorsed by Gambhir and other officials, seeks to ensure players prioritize domestic and national commitments over personal distractions.

These measures indicate a shift towards pre-COVID protocols, focusing on discipline and team unity. A follow-up meeting between Gambhir and BCCI officials is likely during the upcoming T20I in Kolkata to address ongoing controversies.
