Odisha, once infamous for frequent blackouts and fragile power supply, has today emerged as one of India’s strongest electricity networks. Cyclones like Fani (2019), Yaas (2021), and Dana (2024) routinely flattened grids, while scorching summers pushed temperatures above 50°C. Yet, against all odds, ordinary linemen, engineers, and women’s self-help groups carried the state from darkness to light.
The turning point came in 2020 when Odisha entered a public–private partnership with Tata Power. With ₹5,900 crore invested in substations, feeders, smart meters, and a real-time technology centre, the system became resilient. Customer care centres and SHG women bridged the gap between villagers and discoms, restoring trust. Even during Cyclone Dana, power returned to hospitals and homes within hours.
Today, AT&C losses have halved from 30% to nearly 16%, better than the national average. Farmers irrigate without fear, industries are reviving, and 18 microgrids now light up remote tribal villages. Over 15,000 local workers - nearly 90% Odias - form the backbone of this transformation.
Odisha’s journey proves that with trust, technology, and community resilience, even the toughest terrains can shine bright - lighting the path for India.
