The Supreme Court of India has put a stay on the Allahabad High Court's ruling, which controversially stated that grabbing a minor's breasts or breaking a pyjama string does not constitute attempt to rape.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih expressed deep concern over the insensitivity of the ruling, which was issued four months after being reserved. The court observed that such remarks are inhuman and legally unsound, prompting a suo motu hearing after the 'We the Women of India' organization challenged the judgment.

The apex court has sought responses from the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government and requested the assistance of top legal officers. Meanwhile, the controversial Allahabad HC order, which downgraded the charges against the accused, has sparked nationwide outrage, raising critical concerns over justice for sexual assault survivors in India.
