Report: Rohit Sharma set to retire from Test cricket after Sydney clash

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20 internationals after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, is reportedly planning to step away from Test cricket as well. According to a report by The Times of India (TOI), Rohit is likely to announce his retirement following the final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. Discussions among top BCCI officials and selectors have reportedly raised questions about Rohit’s position in the Test squad.

The report suggests that Rohit might seek approval to play the World Test Championship (WTC) final if India qualifies. However, should India lose the Sydney Test, he is expected to retire. This speculation follows India's heavy 184-run defeat in the Melbourne Test, which added to Rohit's underwhelming captaincy record in Tests, with five losses and one draw in six matches.

India’s recent form under Rohit in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been inconsistent. Despite securing a win in Perth under vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah’s leadership, India suffered their heaviest defeat in Melbourne. Chasing 340 on a flat pitch, the team crumbled, with only two players managing double-digit scores.

Adding to the woes, India was recently whitewashed by New Zealand at home for the first time in Test history. Rohit's personal form has also been poor, with just 31 runs in five innings across the series—barely surpassing Bumrah's 30 wickets. To keep their WTC final hopes alive, India must win in Sydney and rely on Australia losing all their remaining Tests in Sri Lanka.
