The Machilipatnam Port once a bustling maritime center under Satavahanas, Qutb Shahis, and European traders is undergoing a dramatic rebirth. Known as Masulipatnam in ancient texts, it thrived in spice, textile, and muslin trade with Rome, Persia, and Southeast Asia. Today, a new greenfield port at Manginapudi is taking shape, with construction rapidly progressing beneath its historical origins.
Envisioned in two phases, it will begin with a four-berth design capable of handling 35 million tonnes per annum, eventually expanding to 16 berths and 116 MMTPA capacity over 2,935 acres. The project includes a tranquil harbor basin with robust breakwaters and a deep, wide access channel.
After overcoming significant delays since 2007 including cancelled contracts and governance shifts the project gained renewed momentum from 2023 onward. A Special Purpose Vehicle, MPDCL, now drives construction, with MEIL executing the engineering. Nearly half of the build is complete, with plans to accommodate 80,000 DWT vessels.
When operational, Machilipatnam Port is set to re-establish the city's economic prominence unlocking exports, logistics corridors, and regional industrial growth while honoring its legacy as an enduring hub on India’s maritime map.
