A stampede-like situation at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on Mauni Amavasya left around 30 women injured, leading seers from the Akharas to cancel their sacred Amrit Snan. The chaos erupted when barricades collapsed under immense crowd pressure, causing several women to faint. The unconscious devotees fell, triggering panic as the massive crowd surged forward.
Authorities swiftly responded by rushing the injured to on-site medical facilities, while those seriously hurt were shifted to Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College. The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad President, Mahant Ravindra Puri, confirmed the decision to call off the holy dip, urging devotees to perform their ritual bathing elsewhere.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened, directing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure immediate relief measures. Pontoon bridges were closed to prevent further mishaps, while AI-powered surveillance, drones, and additional police forces worked to manage the overwhelming crowd.
With over 10 crore devotees expected on Mauni Amavasya alone, the Indian Railways operated 360 special trains to accommodate the influx. However, chaos spread to the railways, as frustrated passengers pelted stones at a Mahakumbh Special train upon finding its doors locked.
Despite the tragic incident, the Maha Kumbh continues, with over 15 crore pilgrims having taken a dip so far. The fair, which began on January 13, will conclude on February 26.
