Is anime making you have unrealistic expectations?

Ever found yourself thinking, “Why can't I look like that anime character?” or comparing your love life to the flawless relationships seen in anime? Maybe you think, “Why can’t my partner be as thoughtful as the characters in Your Name or as dedicated as Naruto?"

Whether it’s the sleek, slender figures of female protagonists or the chiselled muscles of male heroes, anime characters or the portrayals of romance, anime can make us question our reality in every sense.

While anime offers emotional depth and captivating narratives, allowing viewers to escape real-life stresses. For some, anime provides comfort, like watching a hero overcome personal struggles or witnessing a perfect friendship. But the perfect, often unrealistic appearances of these characters can lead viewers, especially women, to compare themselves to these stylized ideals. The emotional resonance of these stories can be cathartic, offering relief from anxiety, loneliness, or low self-esteem. Characters with flawless features or impossible body proportions can create distorted perceptions of beauty, making real-life appearances feel insufficient in comparison.

To enjoy anime without falling into this trap, it's important to set boundaries otherwise we start to expect real-life relationships to mirror these fantasies. Characters in anime often have exaggerated qualities—unrealistic levels of devotion, perfection, and understanding.

This can lead to dissatisfaction with our own relationships, where flaws and imperfections are inevitable. The more we immerse ourselves in these idealized worlds, the more we may struggle to deal with real-world issues.

The key is balance. Set boundaries with anime consumption, engage in diverse activities, and avoid measuring your self-worth against fictional standards. Anime should be enjoyed for its storytelling and creativity, not as a source of unrealistic expectations about beauty or love. By appreciating anime for what it is, without comparing yourself to its idealized characters, you can maintain a healthier, more realistic view of both yourself and your relationships.
