Kangana Ranaut's much-anticipated political drama Emergency finally hit theaters on January 17, after facing multiple delays since its announcement in 2022. Despite battling tough opposition, including challenges with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and calls for bans from various political and religious groups, the film has managed to make its mark.
In a candid conversation with Shubhankar Mishra, Kangana opened up about the financial hurdles she faced while bringing this project to life. "Yes, I had financial struggles," she admitted, revealing that many people pulled out, and no OTT platform was willing to buy the film. In fact, she had to mortgage her own house to fund the production. "I didn't have anyone to lean on for support," she shared, reflecting on the tough journey.
Kangana also got real about the personal and professional challenges that have come her way, including the numerous cases filed against her. "I never had a PR team to promote myself, but others used PR to tarnish my image," she explained. She recalled being unfairly branded with harsh labels like "psycho," "chudail," and "stalker," emphasizing how no one should speak about a woman like that.
Emergency, which marks Kangana's solo directorial debut, sees her playing the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film also features Anupam Kher, Mahima Choudhary, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik in pivotal roles. While the film opened to mixed reviews, it's already made an impressive Rs 6 crore in its first three days, proving that despite the odds, Kangana's resilience shines through.
