January 23 marks the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a leader whose fearless resolve and visionary leadership made him one of the most iconic figures of India’s freedom struggle. Recognizing his unparalleled contributions, the Government of India commemorates this day as Parakram Diwas, a tribute to his valor and patriotism.
Born in 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha, Netaji displayed extraordinary intelligence and determination from a young age. He stunned the nation by topping the Indian Civil Services Examination but renounced the prestigious career, declaring that serving a colonial government was against his principles. This act of defiance was just the beginning of a life dedicated to India's liberation.
Netaji's revolutionary spirit led him to establish the Indian National Army (INA), which fought for India's independence alongside Axis powers during World War II. He envisioned a free India with equal opportunities for all, challenging social hierarchies and promoting inclusivity. His creation of the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, an all-women combat unit, was a groundbreaking step in empowering women in the freedom movement.
Despite his immense contributions, Bose's life is shrouded in mystery. Official reports claim he died in a plane crash in Taiwan on August 18, 1945, but the lack of concrete evidence fueled endless speculation. Many believed he survived and lived incognito, with theories ranging from his possible exile in Russia to his rumored identity as “Gumnami Baba” in Uttar Pradesh. Multiple commissions were set up to unravel the truth, but the enigma of Netaji's fate endures, captivating historians and the public alike.
Netaji’s words, “Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom,” still ignite a sense of patriotism in the hearts of millions. His life serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for India's independence and the courage it takes to challenge oppression. Parakram Diwas is not just a celebration of his legacy but a call to imbibe his fearless spirit and dedication to justice.
