U.S. President Donald Trump intensified tensions on Monday, warning Hamas to release all Israeli hostages by Saturday or face the collapse of the fragile Gaza ceasefire. His remarks followed Hamas's postponement of prisoner exchanges, accusing Israel of violating truce commitments, including delays in humanitarian aid and prisoner releases.
The ceasefire, effective since January 19, temporarily halted over 15 months of fighting and facilitated five hostage exchanges. However, Trump's proposal to take over the Gaza Strip, displace its two million residents, and bar their return has drawn fierce criticism. Labeling Gaza "uninhabitable," Trump suggested resettling Palestinians in Jordan and Egypt, threatening to cut U.S. aid if they refuse. Both nations have rejected the plan, with Egypt calling it a violation of Palestinian rights.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump's proposal as "revolutionary," despite international condemnation and warnings from the U.N. about breaches of international law. Meanwhile, Hamas accuses Israel of breaching the ceasefire by delaying aid deliveries and causing civilian deaths, further stalling exchanges.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled Hamas's postponement a "complete violation" of the truce, ordering heightened military readiness around Gaza. With negotiations set to continue in Qatar, the crisis highlights deepening divides and the fragile state of the ceasefire.
Trump's plan evokes historical pain for Palestinians, reminiscent of the 1948 Nakba. As the Gaza crisis unfolds, global pressure mounts on all sides to prevent renewed bloodshed.
