Tensions between the United States and China have intensified following President Donald Trump's decision to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods, citing the fentanyl crisis as justification. In a bold response, the Chinese Embassy in Washington stated, "If war is what the US wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war, or any other type of war, we're ready to fight till the end."
China's Foreign Ministry dismissed the fentanyl issue as a "flimsy excuse" for the tariff hikes, emphasizing that the United States should treat China as an equal partner in resolving such matters. The ministry criticized the US for shifting blame and undermining bilateral cooperation, stating, "They've been punishing us for helping them. This is not going to solve the US's problem and will undermine our counternarcotics dialogue and cooperation."
In retaliation, China announced additional tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on various US agricultural products, including soybeans, corn, dairy, and beef. These measures are set to impact a significant portion of US exports to China, escalating the trade dispute further.
The escalating rhetoric and retaliatory measures have raised concerns about a full-scale trade war between the world's two largest economies, with potential global economic repercussions.
