A dense smog engulfed Agra, obscuring the iconic Taj Mahal and highlighting the worsening air pollution across northern India. On Thursday, visibility dropped significantly around the world heritage site, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Agra recorded at 193, categorized as ‘moderate’ by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Rising PM2.5 levels and increased moisture contributed to the smog.
Widespread Pollution in Delhi-NCR
Delhi's air pollution has reached alarming levels. The city’s AQI entered the “severe” category, with some areas reporting levels as high as 481, classified as “severe plus.” This level poses significant health risks even for healthy individuals, while those with pre-existing conditions are at greater risk. Stubble burning in neighboring states, combined with low temperatures and high moisture, has worsened the situation.
Restrictions and Penalties
In response, Delhi implemented Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Key measures include:
- Vehicle bans: Private BS III petrol and BS IV diesel vehicles prohibited; violators face ₹20,000 fines.
- Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC): 4,855 challans were issued on Friday, totaling ₹4.8 crore in fines.
- Construction restrictions: Certain activities have been stopped to curb dust pollution.
- Staggered work timings: Offices now follow adjusted schedules to ease traffic emissions.
- Transportation Disruptions
Thick smog disrupted transportation, with over 160 flights delayed and seven canceled at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Train operations were also affected, with 28 trains delayed by 2-9 hours. Passengers faced long waits amid reduced visibility.
Measures and Warnings
Delhi shifted all primary schools to online classes. Central government offices operate from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, while others have staggered timings. Authorities continue to monitor AQI levels, with forecasts suggesting temporary improvement in the coming days.
AQI Figures :
- Agra: 193 (moderate)
- Delhi: 567 (severe plus), with 32 of 34 monitoring stations reporting severe levels.
The deteriorating air quality underscores the urgent need for long-term measures to combat pollution and mitigate health risks.
