Brussels sprouts have been identified by cardiologists as a top vegetable for promoting heart health. Dr. Carl Lavie Jr., Medical Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention at Ochsner Health, emphasizes their benefits, noting that they are often overlooked in heart-healthy diets.
A single cup of cooked Brussels sprouts provides approximately 6 grams of fiber, contributing significantly to the recommended daily intake of 25 to 38 grams. Fiber supports heart health by promoting beneficial gut bacteria, which produce short-chain fatty acids that can help lower blood pressure.
These vegetables are also an excellent source of vitamin K, with one cup offering more than twice the daily requirement. Vitamin K plays a crucial role in blood clotting and maintaining bone strength. However, individuals on blood-thinning medications should consult their healthcare provider before increasing their intake of vitamin K-rich foods.
Brussels sprouts contain natural nitrates, compounds that the body converts into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide aids in dilating blood vessels, thereby improving circulation and reducing blood pressure. Additionally, these vegetables are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that combats free radicals, and potassium, a mineral essential for regulating blood pressure.
