There is a saree in the rich tapestry of fabrics and textiles in India called the 'Paithani Saree.' The history of the Paithani saree dates back to the era of the Mahabharata. Once adorned by Draupadi herself, this saree is not just a mere fabric. It's a royal tale of six yards which was traditionally worn by upper class aristocracies. The saree originated from the ‘Paithan’ village of Maharashtra from where it gets its name.
The Paithani saree is known for its bright red, blue, pink, parrot green, and orange colour scheme. The identification of Paithani is the traditional peacock motifs called morbangadi. The motifs are inspired by nature, so you can find a lot of parrots, peacocks, flowers, and nature-inspired patterns on the saree. The traditional six-yard saree is made out of 500 grams of pure silk thread and another 250 grams of embroidery thread and it takes 3 months to 6 months tentatively to complete a single saree. The identification of an original handloom Paithani saree is the same look of the saree inside out. It can be easily distinguished from the fake power loom saree that are easily available in the market. The original handloom Paithani sarees have an unevenness on the surface due to handwoven threads and intricate embroidery. The zari threads traditionally were made out of pure gold and silver.
The Paithani saree design was featured on the vertical stabilizer rudder of an aeroplane of British Airways. The design was created by famous Indian textile designer, Meera Mehta. It is among the very few sarees that are featured om such a scale internationally. It is a must-have royal affair from the tales of Maharashtra that everyone should have in their wardrobe!
