The survival of our planet’s rarest wildlife is under serious threat. The Living Planet Report 2024 revealed a shocking 73% decline in vertebrate populations since 1970. According to the IUCN Red List, more than 47,000 species are on the verge of extinction. Among them, seven stand out as critically endangered, symbolizing the crisis facing our biodiversity.
The Sunda Pangolin, hunted for its meat and scales, is disappearing from Southeast Asia’s forests. The Amur Leopard, with just about 130 left in Russia and China, remains one of the rarest big cats. The Sunda Tiger, confined to Sumatra, is the smallest tiger subspecies but critically endangered. The Mountain Gorilla, with only 1,063 left, fights for survival in Central Africa. The Bornean Orangutan, the world’s largest tree-dwelling mammal, has lost over 100,000 individuals in just 16 years. The Yangtze Finless Porpoise, the last freshwater porpoise, struggles in China’s Yangtze River. Finally, the Black Rhino, with only 6,421 left, faces constant threats from poaching.
Their stories are a grim reminder: saving them is not just about wildlife—it’s about saving our planet’s future.
