What Are Green Firecrackers?

Green firecrackers are designed to produce fewer pollutants compared to traditional fireworks. They emit lower levels of particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide, and are free from harmful chemicals like barium. Developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), these crackers are approved by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) .

Regulations for Use

The Supreme Court has set specific guidelines for the use of green firecrackers:

  • Sale Period: October 18 to October 21, 2025.

  • Time Restrictions: Bursting allowed only between 6:00 am to 7:00 am and 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

  • Designated Sale Locations: Only licensed vendors at approved sites can sell green firecrackers.

  • QR Code Requirement: Each cracker must have a QR code for traceability .

Environmental Considerations

While green firecrackers are less polluting than traditional ones, they still contribute to air and noise pollution. The Supreme Court emphasized that crackers smuggled from outside Delhi-NCR cause more harm than green crackers, underscoring the importance of regulating their sale and use .

In a significant move ahead of Diwali 2025, the Supreme Court of India has authorized the sale and use of certified green firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) from October 18 to October 21. This decision aims to balance the festive spirit with environmental concerns.

Conclusion

This decision reflects a balanced approach, allowing residents of Delhi-NCR to celebrate Diwali with reduced environmental impact. Adherence to the stipulated guidelines will be crucial in ensuring a safe and eco-friendly festive season.
