Experts warns that seemingly harmless dietary supplements may silently damage the liver and kidneys when misused. They spotlight five risky habits:
-
Believing "natural" means safe – Herbs like comfrey, kava, and high-dose green tea extract can disrupt drug metabolism and trigger liver toxicity, especially when used alongside medications.
-
Excessive protein powders – Frequent, high intake of whey or casein creates nitrogenous waste, straining the kidneys, particularly in those with even mildly reduced renal function .
-
Stacking overlapping nutrients – Simultaneous use of multiple multivitamins or boosters can push vitamin A, iron, and selenium to toxic levels, risking organ damage.
-
Using fat burners and detox pills – These often contain stimulants or diuretics that dehydrate and strain kidneys, while the liver works overtime to process synthetic compounds.
-
Self-prescribing without health checks – Supplements taken without medical guidance—especially among diabetics, hypertensive individuals, or pregnant women—can exacerbate conditions and harm organ function.
We advocate for consulting healthcare professionals before starting supplements, maintaining adequate hydration, monitoring organ health via tests, and relying on a balanced diet for nutrients.
