A recent study by the University of Mississippi has found that cinnamon, a commonly used spice, may interfere with the effectiveness of certain prescription medications. The research indicates that cinnamaldehyde, the primary compound in cinnamon, can activate receptors that accelerate drug metabolism, potentially reducing the efficacy of medications.
While moderate consumption of cinnamon in food is generally considered safe, the study cautions against excessive intake, particularly through supplements. High doses of cinnamon, especially the Cassia variety commonly found in supermarkets, contain significant levels of coumarin—a natural blood thinner. This could pose risks for individuals on anticoagulant medications. In contrast, Ceylon cinnamon, or "true cinnamon," has lower coumarin content and is deemed safer.
The researchers emphasize the importance of consulting healthcare providers before incorporating high-dose cinnamon supplements into one's regimen, especially for individuals with chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease.
