In a recent statement, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that his administration's use of tariffs played a pivotal role in preventing multiple global conflicts, including a potential war between India and Pakistan earlier this year. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump asserted, "If I didn't have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars raging." He emphasized that the U.S. acted as a "peacekeeper" due to its strategic economic policies.
Trump detailed a specific incident involving India and Pakistan, stating that during a military standoff, seven planes were shot down. He claimed to have intervened by threatening to sever trade relations, which led to a cessation of hostilities. "Not only did we make hundreds of billions of dollars, but we're a peacekeeper because of tariffs," Trump remarked.
While Trump's assertions highlight the administration's emphasis on economic leverage in foreign policy, they have been met with skepticism and calls for verification. Nevertheless, the statements underscore the administration's belief in tariffs as a tool for maintaining global stability.
