India’s rising summer heat is becoming more dangerous than ever, and experts say the biggest threat is not just temperature but something called “wet-bulb temperature”.
Wet-bulb temperature measures the combination of heat and humidity together. When humidity levels become too high, sweat cannot evaporate properly from the skin. This prevents the human body from cooling itself naturally, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Experts explain that even if the temperature does not look extremely high, heavy humidity can make conditions far more dangerous. The body starts trapping heat internally, putting pressure on organs like the heart and brain.
Doctors warn that prolonged exposure to high wet-bulb temperatures can become life-threatening, especially for elderly people, children, outdoor workers and those with health conditions.
As heatwaves become more intense across India, health experts are advising people to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, wear loose clothing and take frequent cooling breaks.
Scientists believe wet-bulb temperature could become one of the biggest climate-related health threats in the coming years, especially in hot and humid regions.
