Sudan is enduring one of the deadliest conflicts in recent history, yet the world barely notices. Since April 2023, a violent power struggle between Sudan’s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has claimed around 150,000 lives and forced nearly 12 million people to flee their homes.
Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer Moises Saman recently spent weeks in Darfur and refugee camps in Chad, capturing haunting images of grief, hunger, and resilience. Families live in overcrowded camps with little food, scarce clean water, and collapsing health services. The rainy season has worsened conditions, flooding shelters and spreading malaria. Aid cuts have made things worse—most emergency food kitchens are shut down.
The war’s toll on women and children is especially severe. The U.N. estimates 7 million women and girls have lost access to reproductive healthcare, causing rising maternal deaths and newborn mortality. Stories like that of Khadija, a young mother who lost her baby hours after birth in a makeshift clinic, highlight the silent suffering.
Despite its magnitude, Sudan’s war remains overshadowed by other global crises. The question remains: how long can the world ignore a humanitarian tragedy of this scale?
