Jaipur, founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, was India’s first planned city—its nine-block grid and fortified walls a testament to advanced urban design . The nickname “Pink City” stems from a landmark moment in 1876, when Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II ordered the entire old city painted in shades of pink - symbolizing hospitality - to welcome the visiting Prince of Wales .
This pink hue wasn’t merely ceremonial. A law enacted soon after ensured buildings maintained the color throughout the city’s core. Iconic structures like the Hawa Mahal - crafted of pink sandstone with its 953 lattice windows—and landmarks such as Amber Fort, City Palace, and Albert Hall continue to reflect Jaipur’s stunning monochromatic harmony .
Together, this legacy of planning, hospitality, and preservation gives Jaipur its unforgettable identity - the Pink City.
