A major controversy unfolded on the fifth day of the fourth Test in the Border-Gavaskar series when Yashasvi Jaiswal was controversially dismissed by the third umpire. The incident occurred as Jaiswal, who was batting at 84, faced a bouncer from Australian bowler Pat Cummins. Jaiswal attempted to pull the delivery, which narrowly passed his bat and gloves. The Australian players immediately appealed, and the on-field umpire initially ruled Jaiswal not out. However, the decision was challenged by the Australian team, leading to a review.
During the review, Snick-O technology, which is typically used to detect faint edges, showed no spike as the ball passed Jaiswal. Despite this, the third umpire overruled the on-field decision and declared the Indian batter out. This decision sparked widespread disbelief, as the evidence did not conclusively support the claim that Jaiswal had made contact with the ball.
Jaiswal's dismissal significantly impacted India's chances in the match, as they were already struggling. The team ultimately succumbed to a 184-run defeat, giving Australia a 2-1 lead in the series. With only the final Test in Sydney remaining, India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final are now in jeopardy. This loss adds further pressure on the Indian team, as they face a tough challenge in the upcoming match to salvage their chances of qualification.
