When the Andhra High Court’s landmark verdict disqualified Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, it triggered one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy. In State of Uttar Pradesh v. Raj Narain, Justice Jagmohanlal Sinha found Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral malpractice - specifically misusing a government official as her election agent and employing state machinery in her campaign - under Section 123(7) of the Representation of the People Act. His verdict annulled her 1971 election and disqualified her from holding public office for six years.
The judgment, delivered with steely resolve - evident in formal courtroom protocols and his refusal to be swayed - prompted the declaration of Emergency just 13 days later.
When democracy was restored, IPS officer VR “VRL” Lakshminarayanan, then an Additional Director in the CBI, was ordered to arrest Indira Gandhi in a corruption case. Known for his restraint, he carried out the arrest respectfully - refusing to handcuff her - and remained unwavering in his integrity, even when his career prospects were affected.
Together, these two figures symbolize unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law during a perilous era.
