In a brazen early morning attack on July 17, five armed men entered Paras HMRI Hospital along Bailey Road in Patna and fatally shot Chandan Mishra, a 36‑year‑old gangster on medical parole. Armed with pistols, the assailants walked swiftly through hospital corridors, entered his ICU room (Room 209) on the second floor, and opened fire multiple times at close range before escaping—all captured in chilling CCTV footage .
Mishra, serving life sentences for the 2011 killing of businessman Rajendra Kesari, was undergoing liver surgery recovery. He had over 20 criminal cases registered and was granted parole set to end on July 18 . Despite being in a high-security facility, the gunmen bypassed checkpoints and surveillance cameras—possibly after prior reconnaissance—and fled within just 30 seconds .
The attack has triggered alarm over severe lapses in hospital and law‑and‑order protocols in Patna. Police suspect involvement of a rival gang connected to his long-standing enmity with associate Sheru, and are investigating potential collusion with hospital security .
Political leaders have condemned the killing, with opposition figures accusing the Nitish Kumar government of failing to curb escalating violence. An official probe is underway, involving forensic and canine units, and a post‑mortem is in progress.
