One of the biggest reasons people buy a YouTube Premium subscription ($14/month) is the ability to play videos in the background. But Microsoft is quietly testing a feature that could offer this perk for free through its Edge browser on Android.
Currently available on the Edge Canary build, the feature can be unlocked by enabling the “Video Background Play” option through browser flags. Once activated, YouTube videos will continue to play even if you switch apps, open new tabs, or lock your phone-something that normally requires Premium.
That’s not all. Edge Canary also comes with a built-in ad blocker, giving users an uninterrupted experience while watching YouTube or browsing other sites. Together, these features could make Edge a strong alternative to both Chrome and the official YouTube app.
However, there’s a catch. In the past, Google has blocked Microsoft’s attempts to bypass YouTube’s rules, like when its Windows Phone YouTube app allowed ad-free downloads in 2013. It remains to be seen whether Google will take action again.
If this rolls out widely, YouTube Premium might face serious competition.
