U.S. President Trump has announced that Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions for a 60-day truce in Gaza, to be implemented by mediators Qatar and Egypt, aiming to halt nearly 21 months of conflict. The proposal includes a phased hostage exchange—10 live captives and 18 bodies—complemented by partial Israeli withdrawals, increased humanitarian aid, and staged peace talks.
Hamas has responded "in a positive spirit" and is open to discussion. However, critical issues remain unresolved—for example, Hamas insists on a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal, while Israel demands Hamas’s disarmament and dismantling.
Domestic politics also pose hurdles. Israeli PM Netanyahu faces pressure from far-right allies, limiting his flexibility to commit to anything beyond a short pause . Gazans remain guarded, fearful of another collapsed agreement, as essential humanitarian conditions—fuel, food, aid access—are still failing.
Despite Trump’s optimism—warning Hamas that “it will only get worse” if they don’t agree—analysts caution that without bridging deal-breaking gaps, this 60-day proposal could simply repeat past failures.
