A Board Game created your UPI Scanner?

Ever scanned a QR code to pay via UPI or log in to WhatsApp? Meet the genius behind it—Masahiro Hara, a Japanese engineer who invented the QR code in 1994 while working at Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary.

What's wild is that he got the idea not in a lab, but while playing the traditional board game "Go", which uses a 19x19 black-and-white grid. That grid inspired the data-storing structure of today's QR codes.

Originally built to track auto parts, this tech now powers everything from Aadhaar authentication to movie tickets to e-commerce payments. Thanks to its fast scanning, error correction, and ability to hold more data than barcodes, the QR code has become the unsung hero of India's digital ecosystem.

So next time you scan that little black-and-white box, remember - it started as a game. And now, it's the game-changer.
