A nature adventure with a post-Industrial twist — Down Under!

Design studio Formafantasma presents Down Under: The Curious Fall of a Child Who Knew Nothing and Became Everything, an illustrated picture book that reimagines our relationship with nature and postindustrial landscapes. Born from a C-mine commission and residency, the book explores Belgium’s regenerated mining sites through a narrative that marries fable with science.

The story follows a child who accidentally tumbles into a hole in an open field and descends through hidden Earth layers encountering unexpected lifeforms and ecosystems that reshape their worldview. Clément Vuillier’s illustrations draw inspiration from scientific imagery petrography and SEM scans creating poetic visuals rooted in realism.

The book is thoughtfully structured into two parts. The first unfolds the imaginative journey, while the second compiles essays and dialogues: a critical essay by Teresa Castro, and enriching interviews with scientists and educators such as Natalie Beenaerts, geologist Roland Dreesen, and microbiologist François Rineau. These contributions challenge anthropocentric narratives and provoke reflection on interdependence and coexistence.

Drawing on the educational ideals of designers like Enzo Mari and Bruno Munari, Down Under serves as both a children’s fable and a transgenerational educational tool prompting readers of all ages to rethink extractivist mindsets and embrace ecological transformation.
