Hormonal shifts during this time can lead to increased oil production, clogged pores, and breakouts. Addressing these changes early with a proper skincare routine can significantly improve skin health and self-confidence.
Experts suggest starting with a simple regimen. Gentle cleansing is key — washing the face twice daily with a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser helps clear excess oil and dirt without irritating the skin. Over-washing or scrubbing too hard can actually worsen acne, so a balanced approach is essential.
Moisturizing is another vital step, even for oily skin. Many teens skip this, fearing more breakouts, but oil-free, lightweight moisturizers help maintain hydration and prevent overproduction of sebum.
Sunscreen, too, is a must. A broad-spectrum SPF shields the skin from UV damage and reduces the risk of acne scars darkening.
Teens are also advised to avoid touching their face unnecessarily. Fingers carry bacteria and oils that can aggravate skin conditions. Removing makeup before bed and regularly cleaning pillowcases and mobile phones can further reduce exposure to dirt and bacteria.
Diet and lifestyle also play a role. Drinking water, eating fruits and vegetables, and limiting sugary and oily foods contribute to healthier skin. Although food isn’t the sole cause of acne, a balanced diet supports the body’s natural healing processes.
Finally, it’s important for teens to be patient. Skincare is a long-term process. If over-the-counter products don’t work or if breakouts are severe, consulting a dermatologist is the best course of action.
