The warm glow of a scented candle, filling the room with soothing aromas, might not be as harmless as it seems. A recent study has uncovered a concerning reality those beloved scented candles could be releasing potentially toxic indoor particles, affecting the very air we breathe.
Researchers found that burning scented candles, especially those made with paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances, emits ultrafine particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and benzene.
These particles can linger in the air, making their way into our lungs and potentially causing respiratory issues, headaches, and even long-term health risks. In poorly ventilated spaces, the impact is even more significant, leading to indoor air pollution that rivals the harmful effects of traffic fumes.
The good news? Not all candles are harmful. Beeswax and soy-based candles burn cleaner, releasing fewer toxins into the air. Opting for candles made with natural essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances can also reduce exposure to harmful chemicals. Proper ventilation, such as opening windows or using air purifiers, can further minimize risks.
While scented candles add a cozy touch to any space, this study serves as a wake-up call. The next time you light one, consider what’s truly in the air. Are you breathing in relaxation or something far more dangerous?
